...
Late night storm
Like a raspy yawn as it starts
to stir, a gentle roar
from a distant as it approaches;
shut the windows,
don't let it in.
A crack of lightning
snaps
the circuit breaker
off, lights
and refrigerator go out;
thunder, like a run of cannon
balls rolling down the stairs --
hands cup ears, heads lowered
as if enduring celestial scoldings;
comforting vibrations
lead back to calm.
The whole house pauses to listen:
a billion raindrops dive down
hitting ground
together -- an applause.

This is fantastic!
'like a run of cannon balls rolling down the stairs'
'a billion raindrops dive down hitting ground
together -- an applause'
All of it, just brilliant! :o)
That is wonderful. I was with you every step of the way, with baited breath! Then that finale! Wow, that final stanza was glorious. I loved it. :-)
very nice capture...love all the sounds you captured and bring this alive very nicely....very cool....
Hard to add to the comments above (I echo all of them) but I was delighted and laughed at the end - like when I am surprised by joy. Thank you!
Loved how you captured the sounds of thunder and rain. A billion raindrops... fantastic! and
as if enduring celestial scoldings;
Loved what you did here!
Deborah, Susannah, Brian, Anna, Ms LVH, thank you all for reading and for your wonderful comments. Glad you like. :)
we could do with more rain, it's getting hot and humid every day.
great visuals here. i really like the last lines, raindrops like an applause. bravo! :)
dnsake: hi! It did rain but not long enough to make the day cooler. Thanks for the comment on my poem. :)
this makes me want to have a rain storm! Lovely...Brava!
Storms, for me, are both exciting and frightening. I often find myself being woken in the early hours of the day to the sounds of a storm, my bed is right next to the window and I'll often, groggy as is, peak out to look- and there is a silence all around. Really enjoyed this piece a lot, especially here where you get the rapid, frantic like elements of a frightening experience followed up by a calmness- so encompassing, literal in it's painting and metaphoric all in one. Really nice, thanks for sharing

Ah, Ravenblack ... you have truly drawn the storm. I could hear it coming in. Excellent!

Fred: always appreciate your feedback. Thank you!
I love a good thunder and lightening storm, but, not too close to home! You did capture all of the living energy here, lovely!
Thanks Daydreamer. I like storms, but not when they wake me up in the middle of the night like that. :)
I'm amazed at what you did with this blend of sounds and the contrast that you created with the line about the whole house pausing to listen. Just wonderful. Thank you, Raven.
Thanks Victoria. :)
(PS: Blogger still having hiccups I see. :/)
