It's ok, you're old enough...

***

Moving past a season

A teddy bear toy
hangs on a nail;

summer is going out
with the wind and rain,

soft toy damp to touch
sags, stitches
that made a smile
wanes, button eyes
lose their shine.

A boy put into bed
after being told
he is old enough,

eyes stay wide
under the covers
but only for a night.

Inspired by HVP's photo "Lost and Found".

Thanks for feedback, Brian. Really appreciate it.

I did want to capture that sadness of losing a toy -- I remember the ache of it but then getting over it too.

Age is an interesting idea, never quite understood despite the "age". The middle stanza is really great. Excellent write

Thanks Fred.

Age is some kind of basis for certain kinds of assumptions...

Sad for the boy, did he think he was old enough? Perhaps he was 22 and it was time:) Very sweet and brings back memories. Nice write.

Our attachments start early, don't they and so too the pangs of separation:-)

You certainly did capture the forlorn feeling of both the bear and the boy. Nice connection to summer's end.

Oh, how sad but it happens to every kid that has a security blanket. Well written with succinct lines to allow the reader to fit their memories into the scene.
